The new look (updated)

10 o'clock, June 6, 2005

I was hoping these would be ready in time for WisCon so everyone could meet the new, measurably less unhip Me, but no such luck.

Figure 1. The author, hoping he doesn’t have to start reading R. Crumb now

Update: It’s kind of amusing what the glasses are doing to my self-image — I guess this must be how women feel when they get new haircuts. At the moment I’m sitting in the King County Regional Justice Center (they have wi-fi — whee!) waiting to get called up for jury duty, wearing my new specs and my Black Spot sneakers and my Cold War Supervillain shirt and my blue blazer, in persona as an up-and-coming science fiction writer. (I feel like some sort of intermediate stage between my ordinary self and that woman who showed up for Whitewater jury duty in a Starfleet uniform.) (Google, google . . . aha. “Barbara Adams.”)

Comments

Very nice! Kind-of a geek-chic look, which works for you.

I should add, just in case the previous comment sounded like a diss, that my glasses measure pretty high on the geek-chic-o-meter, too. Or maybe the geek-o-meter...

—— SarahP, 10:08 AM, Monday, June 6, 2005

No, no, I took it as a compliment from the start.

And yours are very chic.

I just got new glasses too. It's very weird having glasses and I was a bit freaked out by the whole thing. So I know what you're talking about. A friend advised me to think of them as a piece of jewellery. Excellent advice.

I think yours are very you. In a good way.

—— Justine Larbalestier, 10:55 AM, Monday, June 6, 2005

Thanks, Justine. I was looking very closely at glasses all through WisCon, and yours were by far the coolest.

—— David Moles, 1:45 PM, Monday, June 6, 2005

Nice! Of course, you might want to get some contacts for when you start kempo next month... nudge, nudge... but until then, the glass are wicked cool. :-D

Great new look!

And is it time yet to start bugging you about Kenpo?

—— Greg van Eekhout, 9:41 AM, Tuesday, June 7, 2005

Tonight I’m going to go check out the school. (I have said it!) If they’re serious about taking new students only on the first Tuesday of the month, it’s going to get complicated, as I was planning on being out of town the first week of July (but haven’t yet bought plane tickets or anything).

Then there’s also the question of what to do with the Thursday practices that would conflict with my writing group — as far as I’m concerned, myself, I think I’d be willing to take a leave of absence from the group, but for the group’s sake I’d feel guilty about it.

—— David Moles, 11:16 AM, Tuesday, June 7, 2005

Well, cool, I hope you like the school, and I look forward to hearing your impressions. Someday I'm going to do a big braindump myself about the experience of looking for a martial arts school, because I think I learned as much about myself and martial arts in general from the search for a dojo as I have from actually taking classes. Good luck!

—— Greg van Eekhout, 12:29 PM, Tuesday, June 7, 2005

Braindump tease!

Tell all!

—— Benjamin Rosenbaum, 7:30 AM, Wednesday, June 8, 2005

I like the new frames. Added in with the camera angle, it makes you look like you are staring down at me, thinking, "You sad, sad little man."

It's possible I'm projecting.

—— Jon Hansen, 8:22 AM, Wednesday, June 8, 2005

Actually I'm staring down at the camera, in the mirror, thinking "You sad, sad little camera."

Or anyway trying to figure out if I've got it lined up straight.
